Two National Guard troops, Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe and Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, were shot on November 26 near the White House in what authorities described as a targeted attack by an Afghan migrant who had previously worked with the US military in Afghanistan, a case now being treated as a terrorism investigation. Andrew Wolfe, the surviving National Guardsman shot by a gunman last week, is showing signs of improvement.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said on Monday that Wolfe, 24, gave a thumbs up to medical personnel when asked if he could hear them, per Reuters. He also wiggled his toes.

Wolfe, one of two West Virginia National Guard members shot on Wednesday, is still in serious condition, Morrisey said.

“Andrew is still fighting for his life,” Morrisey said at a news conference. “Andrew needs prayers.”

Wolfe is from Martinsburg, West Virginia. He joined the West Virginia Air National Guard in 2019.

He was deployed to Washington in August, according to the state’s guard.

His fellow West Virginia National Guard member, Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died Thursday of her gunshot wounds.

She enlisted in the service in 2023 and was also deployed to Washington in August. She was a native of Webster Springs, West Virginia.

The New York Times reported she joined to help pay for college and prepare for a law enforcement career.

Wolfe and Beckstrom were in Washington after U.S. President Donald Trump’s sent National Guard forces there to help fight crime.

The suspect, Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, was radicalized after he and his family moved to the U.S. in 2021, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Sunday.

Lakanwal now faces first-degree murder and other charges. He shot and wounded during his attack.

The Biden administration allowed about 70,000 Afghans who helped the U.S. during the 20-year war in Afghanistan to resettle is the U.S. Lakanwal was one of them.

Lakanwal was part of a CIA-backed unit in Afghanistan and was granted asylum under Trump.
