Former President Donald Trump put his money — or at least Bitcoin — where his mouth is.
On Wednesday, the Republican presidential candidate purchased burgers and beers for customers at PubKey, a Manhattan bar and restaurant known for accepting Bitcoin, per the New York Post.
Trump, 78, is believed to be the first U.S. president to buy something using Bitcoin.
“I just made the first transaction in Bitcoin,” he said as the crowd cheered its approval.
Trump was helped by an employee who steered Trump in making the purchase via a cellphone and the bar’s tablet.
He confirmed it was “very easy” to do.
One customer exclaimed, “Make Bitcoin great again.”
Pubkey marked the purchase as “one of the most historic transactions in #bitcoin history,” with a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Bitcoin has grown in price by more than 500% over the last five years, according to the New York Post.
Currently, the price of one Bitcoin is $61,248.50.
Earlier this week, Trump helped launch World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture founded by businessmen Steve Witkoff and Trump’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.
Trump said all three of his sons, including Barron Trump, persuaded him to go the cryptocurrency route.
“He (Barron) talks about his wallet — He’s got four wallets or something,” Trump said. “And I’m saying, ‘What is a wallet? Explain this to me.’”
Trump vowed in July to make the U.S. “the crypto capital of the planet and the Bitcoin superpower of the world” if he returns to the White House.
“If Bitcoin is going to the Moon — as we say — it’s going to the Moon, I want America to be the nation that leads the way,” he said at the 2024 Bitcoin Conference in Nashville.
The candidate calls himself the “crypto candidate” as his campaign accepts donations in cryptocurrency.
