Former Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer be protected by the Secret Service.
President Donald Trump revoked Harris’ detail Thursday, according to a letter reviewed by CNN.
While former presidents receive Sercret Service protection for life, as a former vice president, Harris was eligible for six months of protection, according to federal law.
Her protection, however, was extended for an additional year. This was due to a directive from former President Joe Biden. That directive was not made public until now, sources familiar with the arrangement report.
Trump cancelled that directive in a memorandum titled “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security,” which was dated Thursday.
“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” according to the letter.
Harris is ready to start a multi-city, high-profile book tour for her memoir, “107 Days.”
The book goes into the short presidential campaign Harris waged against Trump in 2024.
The book will be released Sept. 23.
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” Kirsten Allen, a Harris senior adviser, told CNN.
Doug Emhoff, Harris’ husband, has been without Secret Service protection since July 21 — the date her protection should have ended.
The White House declined to comment; the Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment, per the New York Times.
Since taking office, Trump has ceased Secret Service protection to many others.
This includes John R. Bolton, one of his former national security advisers; Mike Pompeo, one of his former secretaries of state, and Brian Hook, a former aide.
Their protection was cancelled even though there were warnings that the men were receiving ongoing threats from Iran.
