President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he has chosen Mehmet Oz, also known as Dr. Oz, to helm the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Trump announced his decision to move forward with Oz in a post to Truth Social. Oz is a prominent figure in part because of his popular television program, “The Dr. Oz Show,” and made his first foray into national politics in the 2022 cycle, when he unsuccessfully ran for Senate in Pennsylvania.
“I am very pleased to nominate Dr. Mehmet Oz to serve as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator. America is facing a Healthcare Crisis, and there may be no Physician more qualified and capable than Dr. Oz to Make America Healthy Again,” Trump said in his statement. “He is an eminent Physician, Heart Surgeon, Inventor, and World-Class Communicator, who has been at the forefront of healthy living for decades. Dr. Oz will work closely with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to take on the illness industrial complex, and all the horrible chronic diseases left in its wake.”
Trump stated that he believes Oz will help the American healthcare system become more cost-efficient and deliver better health outcomes for Americans in his capacity as chief of the CMS. The president-elect also touted Oz’s educational credentials in his announcement notice, highlighting Oz’s joint medical and business graduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and his experience as a professor of surgery at Columbia University.
Provided the Senate votes to confirm Oz as the leader of a crucial sub-agency in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Oz will replace current CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure.
