President Donald Trump on Sunday threatened to probe former Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie over the ex-governor’s infamous 2013 “Bridgegate” scandal.

Trump claimed in a Truth Social post late Sunday that Christie, who he referred to as “sloppy,” had “lied about the dangerous and deadly closure of the George Washington Bridge in order to stay out of prison.” The president added that “no one is above the law.”

“I just watched Sloppy Chris Christie be interviewed on a ratings challenged ‘News’ Show, ‘This Week With George Slopadopolus,’ on ABC Fake News (By the way, what the ‘hell’ happened to Jonathan Karl’s hair? He looks absolutely terrible!” Trump wrote in the social media post. “It’s amazing what bad ratings, on a failed television show that was forced to pay me $16,000,000, can do to one’s appearance!). Can anyone believe anything that Sloppy Chris says?”

“Do you remember the way he lied about the dangerous and deadly closure of the George Washington Bridge in order to stay out of prison, at the same time sacrificing people who worked for him, including a young mother, who spent years trying to fight off the vicious charges against her,” Trump wrote further. “Chris refused to take responsibility for these criminal acts. For the sake of JUSTICE, perhaps we should start looking at that very serious situation again? NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT.”

Trump’s comments came after Christie blasted Trump during a Sunday appearance on ABC News’ “This Week,” claiming that the president “sees himself as the person who gets to decide everything” and “doesn’t care about any separation” between the White House and criminal investigations.

In 2016, two of Christie’s allies were convicted in a scheme to shut down lanes on the George Washington Bridge connecting New Jersey to Manhattan, as retaliation after Fort Lee’s Democratic mayor declined to endorse Christie’s 2013 reelection bid, which he won in a landslide. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned both convictions in 2020.

While Christie has denied any wrongdoing, the “Bridgegate” scandal played a key role in marring his once-promising political career. Christie was once a close ally to Trump and endorsed him in the 2016 presidential race.

However, the former governor has become a vocal critic of Trump in recent years, and ran against him in the 2024 presidential race — dropping out before a single primary contest, after trailing in the polls.

Christie could not immediately be reached for comment.
