In a striking election-eve message, President Donald Trump threw his weight behind former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, urging voters to support him in Tuesday’s New York City mayoral race to block what he called a “Communist takeover” by Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani.
According to the New York Post, Trump, 79, made the endorsement in a lengthy Truth Social post Monday night, warning that New York would face economic collapse if Mamdani wins.
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home,” Trump wrote. “As a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!”
The president continued, “It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm, and I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad. It is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win.”
The endorsement marks Trump’s most direct appeal yet on behalf of Cuomo — a former political rival who resigned from the governorship amid scandal — as he once again positions himself as a self-styled protector of New York’s economic legacy.
“I would much rather see a Democrat, who has had a Record of Success, WIN, than a Communist with no experience and a Record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE,” Trump said. “He was nothing as an Assemblyman, ranked at the bottom of the class… HE HAS NO CHANCE to bring it back to its former Glory!”
Trump even took a swipe at the Republican nominee, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. “A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani,” he wrote.
“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice,” Trump added. “You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!”
Cuomo, for his part, downplayed the endorsement when asked about Trump’s comments late Monday.
“President Trump doesn’t support me. He opposes Mamdani, right?” Cuomo said. “He believes that Mamdani is an existential threat to New York City. He believes he’s a Communist. He believes he’ll bankrupt New York.”
“He’s not endorsing me, he’s opposing Mamdani,” Cuomo clarified.
The unusual political twist — a Republican president publicly urging voters to support a Democrat — underscores just how polarizing the New York City mayoral race has become, with Trump casting it as a referendum on what he calls the “radical left’s destruction” of America’s biggest city.
