US, UK and Australia Hit Russian Web Host with New Sanctions Over Ransomware Allegations

WASHINGTON, DC - NOVEMBER 12: U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent listens as President Donald Trump delivers remarks before signing recently passed funding legislation to reopen the federal government in the Oval Office of the White House on November 12, 2025, in Washington, DC. The legislation, passed by the House of Representatives tonight, funds the federal government until the end of January 2026 and ends the 43-day government shutdown, the longest in the nation’s history. The United States, Britain, and Australia rolled out a new round of coordinated sanctions on Wednesday targeting a Russia-based web hosting service accused of supporting ransomware operations designed to help cybercriminals hide from law enforcement.

According to The Associated Press, Media Land, a company U.S. officials described as one of several firms that sell access to servers and digital infrastructure used by cyber gangs, was at the center of the announcement.

The Treasury Department said the sanctions also cover three members of Media Land’s leadership team and three affiliated businesses. The action was coordinated closely with the FBI.

Hypercore Ltd. was also cited as part of the operation. Treasury officials described the company as a front for Aeza Group, an internet service provider that was sanctioned earlier this year by the United States.

The penalties block targeted companies and individuals from accessing any property or financial assets held in the U.S., Britain, or Australia. They also prohibit businesses and citizens in those countries from conducting any transactions with the sanctioned organizations or people.

Should the US, UK, and Australia continue sanctions on Russian web hosts over ransomware support?

Banks and financial institutions that ignore the restrictions risk facing sanctions of their own or additional enforcement actions.

This latest round of penalties continues a broader crackdown on Russian cyber infrastructure. Earlier this year, the U.S., Britain, and Australia imposed sanctions on the web-hosting company Zservers and two Russian men accused of helping run the service for the criminal ransomware group LockBit.

Ransomware remains one of the most expensive and disruptive forms of cybercrime. Attacks can grind local governments, hospitals, school systems, and courts to a halt, often costing millions to restore operations.

Most of the criminal groups behind these schemes operate from former Soviet states, where they remain largely beyond the reach of Western law enforcement.

With Wednesday’s actions, officials signaled they plan to continue targeting the digital networks that make those operations possible.
