Former Major League Baseball (MLB) first baseman and World Series champion Mark “Tex” Teixeira announced Thursday that he is launching a Republican bid to represent Texas’ 21st congressional district.

Teixeira declared his candidacy in a post to X, stating that he is “ready to help defend President [Donald] Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families and individual liberty.” Teixeira officially launching his campaign comes after Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy announced Aug. 21 that he will not seek reelection to his heavily Republican seat in Congress — as he is instead running to replace Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is running for U.S. Senate.

“As a lifelong conservative who loves this country, I’m running for Congress to fight for the principles that make Texas and America great,” Teixeira wrote in the social media post. “It takes teamwork to win – I’m ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”

The Texas Rangers drafted Teixeira 5th overall in the 2001 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with the Rangers in 2003 and played with the club until 2007. He also played for the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim before spending his final seven MLB seasons with the New York Yankees.

During his 14-year MLB career, Teixeira earned three All-Star selections, five Gold Gloves, three Silver Sluggers and won a World Series Championship with the Yankees in 2009 — leading the American League in home runs and runs batted in (RBI) the same season.

During his 14 MLB seasons, Teixeira hit 409 home runs. He retired after the 2016 MLB season.

Additionally, Bexar County GOP Vice Chair Kyle Sinclair told the Texas Tribune on Aug. 22 that he is weighing a run in Texas’ 21st congressional district.
