Es la capital de la Gobernación de Basra homónima, así como la tercera ciudad más grande de Iraq en general, detrás de Bagdad y Mosul. Ubicada cerca de la frontera entre Irán e Iraq, la ciudad está situada a lo largo de las orillas del Shatt al-Arab que desemboca en el Golfo Pérsico.
