Caffeine é um estimulante do sistema nervoso central (CNS) da classe metilxantina e é a droga psicoativa mais comumente consumida globalmente. É usado principalmente por suas propriedades eugeroicas, ergogênicas ou nootrópicas (melhoradoras cognitivas); também é usado recreativamente, frequentemente em ambientes sociais. Caffeine atua bloqueando a ligação da adenosina em vários tipos de receptores de adenosina, inibindo os efeitos depressores centrais da adenosina e aumentando a liberação de acetilcolina. Caffeine possui uma estrutura tridimensional semelhante à da adenosina, o que permite que se ligue e bloqueie seus receptores. Caffeine também aumenta os níveis de AMP cíclico através da inibição não seletiva da fosfodiesterase, aumenta a liberação de cálcio dos estoques intracelulares e antagoniza os receptores GABA, embora esses mecanismos geralmente ocorram em concentrações além do consumo humano usual.
