El capitán Frederick Marryat fue un oficial de la Royal Navy y novelista. Hoy se le reconoce como un pionero temprano de la ficción náutica, en particular por su novela semiautobiográfica Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). También se le recuerda por su novela infantil The Children of the New Forest (1847). Además, desarrolló un sistema ampliamente utilizado de señalización marítima con banderas, conocido como el Código de Marryat.
