Ele é chamado de porco doméstico quando distinguido de outros membros do gênero Sus. Algumas autoridades o consideram uma subespécie de Sus scrofa; outras autoridades o consideram uma espécie distinta. Os porcos foram domesticados independentemente duas vezes durante o Neolítico, no Oriente Próximo ao redor da Bacia do Tigre, e na China. Quando os porcos domesticados chegaram à Europa vindos do Oriente Próximo, eles cruzaram extensivamente com javalis na Europa, mas mantiveram suas características domesticadas.
