Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) is insisting former President Donald Trump is “not going to be our nominee” in 2024.

Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade noted House Republicans voted to oust Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) from leadership on Wednesday.

He played a clip of Cheney saying, “I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office.”

When asked if he feels the same way, Cassidy replied, “I absolutely feel like we need a Republican Party which is committed to conservative values that will bring it forward.”

Cassidy pointed out Trump lost the election and, along with that, Republicans lost both the House and the Senate.

“We lost the presidency in four years. Hasn’t happened since Herbert Hoover. Parties and elections are about winning,” Cassidy said.

Listen to the show below:

Explaining he supported Trump’s policies, Cassidy continued, “But parties are about winning and unfortunately over the last four years, we have a track record of losing. We need to win going forward.”

Kilmeade asked Cassidy, “If he’s the nominee would you vote for him?”

Cassidy responded, “He’s not going to be our nominee.”

The Republican was one of the seven senators who voted to convict Trump on the impeachment charge of “incitement of insurrection.”

CNN’s Dana Bash asked Cassidy in February if Trump has a role in the party moving forward, as IJR previously reported.

“You have a lot in that question. Let me put it this way, we’ve got to win in two years, we’ve got to win in four years. If we do that, we’ll do that by speaking to those issues that are important to the American people… not by putting one person on a pedestal and making that one person our focal point,” Cassidy said.
