Former Attorney General Bill Barr is making it clear: standing firm in the face of activist hysteria is not just commendable—it’s essential for preserving law and order.
Barr, who led the Justice Department during the height of the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots, praised Minnesota business leaders on Tuesday for resisting pressure from far-left agitators demanding corporations condemn federal law enforcement amid a wave of anti-ICE protests.
Speaking to The Daily Wire, Barr responded to a recent open letter issued by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce calling for cooperation between federal and state officials after the fatal shooting of armed protester Alex Pretti by a Border Patrol agent.
“I applaud business leaders who did not bow to activist pressure to refuse any cooperation with federal law enforcement,” Barr said. “Fidelity to the ‘rule of law’ demands all citizens to respect the authority of the federal government to faithfully implement federal law throughout the nation, even in communities where it is unpopular.”

The letter, signed by executives from some of Minnesota’s largest companies—including Target and Best Buy—called for “immediate deescalation” and emphasized the need for constructive dialogue, not public grandstanding or performative outrage. Behind the scenes, according to the letter, these business leaders have been facilitating communication between Governor Tim Walz, the Trump White House, and local mayors.
“In a time of heightened tension, these companies could have folded like they did in 2020,” one conservative commentator noted. “But instead, they stayed focused on safety, order, and actual problem-solving.”
In 2020, companies couldn’t release “solidarity” statements fast enough, falling over themselves to appease left-wing mobs following the death of George Floyd. Now, with activist groups again pushing companies to cut ties with law enforcement—demanding ICE agents be banned from parking lots and retail stores—many of those same businesses are staying quiet and focused on facts over feelings.
Will Hild of Consumers’ Research summed it up: “A business response prioritizing neutrality, safety, and their core responsibility to customers and employees = commendable and a stark departure from 2020 escalatory statements from corporate America.”
It’s a turning point. And Bill Barr is right to highlight it. In a time when mobs want to call the shots, the real leaders are those willing to say: not this time.
