Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was roasted by conservatives on Twitter after an image surfaced of her dining in Florida.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R) press secretary Christina Pushaw shared the image and wrote, “Florida is so dangerous scary that AOC decided to go on vacation in Miami this week.”
“You know it’s a free state when even a Democrat can enjoy cocktails without being forced to show her papers or wear a mask,” she added.
The “Team Ron DeSantis” Twitter account wrote, “Welcome to Florida, AOC! We hope you’re enjoying a taste of freedom here in the Sunshine State thanks to leadership.”
“P.S. We recommend the Rock Shrimp Roll and the Aoki Tai the next time you decide to dine in Miami. Cheers!” it added.
Conservatives were quick to react on social media:
The Congresswoman’s trip to the Sunshine State comes as both New York and Florida are experiencing a surge in new COVID-19 infections.
National Review’s Philip Klein recalled Ocasio-Cortez’s response to Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) trip to Cancun, Mexico, as a winter storm battered his state.
“Reminder that when Ted Cruz went to Cancun during Texas energy crisis, AOC blasted him for “abandon his constituents,” he wrote.
In February, Cruz was criticized for leaving his home state as thousands were without power following a winter storm.
Ocasio-Cortez commented at the time, “If Sen. Cruz had resigned back in January after helping gin up a violent insurrection that killed several people, he could’ve taken his vacation in peace. Texans should continue to demand his resignation.”
Ocasio-Cortez has called for Cruz to resign over what she says was his role in inciting the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
While conservatives mocked the New York Congresswoman, liberal commentator Matthew Yglesias argued, “The idea that it’s somehow hypocritical for someone to visit a state whose governor they disagree with about whatever is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard.”
