Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) slammed the Republican Party and Kimberly Guilfoyle as she pointed out the flaws in Guilfoyleâs immigration claims.
After the opening night of the Republican National Convention, Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to express her disapproval of Guilfoyleâs claims as she questioned alleged âimmigrant experience.â
During the RNC speech, Guilfoyle referenced her mother being of Puerto Rican descent as part of her immigrant experience.
Ocasio-Cortez refuted Guilfoyleâs claim of being an immigrant as she reminded her and the Republican Party that Puerto Rico was and still is, part of the United States.
âThe woman the GOP picked as their âproudâ Latina to tout âimmigrant experienceâ didnât seem to know that Puerto Rico is already part of the United States,â Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.
She added, âItâs quite on message, bc it reflects their belief that Latinos arenât real citizens, even when we are Native descendants.â
Ocasio-Cortezâs remarks came shortly after Guilfoyle delivered her speech during the first night of the Republican convention.
Guilfoyle â a strong supporter of Trump, a senior campaign official for his re-election campaign, and Donald Trump Jr.âs girlfriend â referred to herself as a first-generation American.
âMy mother Mercedes was a special education teacher from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. My father, also an immigrant, came to this nation in pursuit of the American dream,â Guilfoyle said on Monday night.
According to History.com, Puerto Rico became an American territory following the 1898 Spanish-American War. Since 1917, Puerto Ricans have been considered citizens of the United States. Because of this, Guilyfoleâs mother has always been considered American.
Like Ocasio-Cortez, many viewers took to Twitter to share their reaction to Guilfoyleâs claims as they criticized her speech. Many also pointed out that she technically is not an immigrant.
