CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten said Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approval rating has sunk among the American population.

A majority of Americans, 59%, said in 2026 that they are not confident in Netanyahu when it comes to world affairs, which increased from the 42% who made the same claim in 2023, according to a Pew Research Center survey. Americans’ declining trust in Netanyahu came while the population continues to largely disapprove of the Iran war.

“In 2023, the not confident percentage was 42. up significantly, up like a rocket, up to 59%,” Enten said. “That’s a nearly 20-point movement in just three years time.And now the majority of Americans say they are not confident when it comes to Bibi Netanyahuand world affairs. And we’re not just talking Democrats here.We’re talking the entire American public, nearly three in five.”

Eighty-one percent of older Democrats and 73% of younger Democrats said they did not trust Netanyahu on world affairs. Younger Republicans between the ages of 18 and 49 are more likely to be discontented with Netanyahu, as the survey found that 58% of younger Republicans disapproved of Netanyahu and 30% of Republicans ages 50 years or older said the same.

“Younger Republicans, nearly three and five, we’re talking 58% compared to 30% of Republicanswho are 50 and older,” Enten continued. “This to me is so fascinating because there is a massive age split within the RepublicanParty when it comes to Bibi Netanyahu and when it comes, of course, to Israel as well.And this to me is going to be very interesting in the years to come, especially as we enterthe 2028 primary season, where we’re seeing this massive flip within the Republican Partyon Israel.”

Netanyahu told “60 Minutes” during a Sunday interview that the Iran war is “not over,” adding that Trump wanted to remove Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium. He also said Israel wants to eventually stop taking any military aid from the U.S. over the next decade.

Polls found that most Americans disapprove of the Iran war, including an Ipsos poll from May 6 which found that 58% of Americans disapproved of the conflict. An Economist/YouGov poll found in March that 60% of Americans opposed the war.

Netanyahu and Israeli officials attempted to convince Trump that war was necessary during a Feb. 11 meeting at the White House, The New York Times reported. The State Department admitted in an April 21 government release that the U.S. entered the conflict on behalf of Israel.
