The Postal Service is facing significant financial challenges.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy warned on Friday if the agency does not experience “dramatic change” it will face an “impending liquidity crisis.”

He also unveiled plans to make “organizational change” to the agency including a management hiring freeze, a request for future voluntary early retirements, and a reduction in Postal Service regions.

“This organizational change will capture operating efficiencies by providing clarity and economies of scale that will allow us to reduce our cost base and capture new revenue,” DeJoy said.

He added, “It is crucial that we do what is within our control to help us successfully complete our mission to serve the American people and, through the universal service obligation, bind our nation together by maintaining and operating our unique, vital and resilient infrastructure.”

Despite DeJoy’s efforts to make changes, House Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) introduced a bill on Wednesday to block the Postal Service from making operational and organizational changes.

Maloney labeled the Trump administrations decision to implement changes amid a pandemic and shortly before the election “irresponsible.”
