Chris Cuomo Defends Trump Voters From ‘Stupid Idea’ That Latinos Backed Him Out Of ‘Ignorance’

NewsNation host Chris Cuomo defended President Donald Trump’s voters after a caller insinuated that Latinos supported him in November because they were ignorant.

The caller, who identified herself as Rosa, said on “The Chris Cuomo Project” that Latinos lack important knowledge and don’t consume quality information, but Cuomo said it was wrong to characterize Trump voters as dumb.

“I just want you to talk about the Latinos put Trump in power. The Latinos didn’t know about other things. They just did it because, okay, the economy and maybe the Latinos want to deport the others,” Rosa said. “The Latinos want the illegals to be deported. And they vote for Trump for that and for the economy.”

“But the bad, I know the economy was good. We had a pandemi, but they don’t know, they never think about that, how they think Trump is going to give them papers,” she continued. “Sometimes you don’t know about those things about Latinos. They don’t know. They don’t listen to good news like you and other news that I watch.”

Cuomo responded by telling the caller people should not “generalize” Latino voters. He then agreed that he thought Trump made gains with them in part because of economic factors and illegal immigration, along with not believing the president “is a bigot.”

The NewsNation host also said that although he does not want to “generalize” he is not surprised by Latinos voting Republican because of their family values and Christian faith.

“They shouldn’t be looked at as a monolith and they shouldn’t be looked at as single-issue voters. And I don’t think it’s about collective ignorance,” Cuomo said. “You know, I hear that a lot from people who are anti-Trump — that they think people who vote for him are stupid. I think that that is a stupid idea. Not you, Rosa — I would never disrespect anybody that way.”

“And I think you’re intelligent, and I think you care, and thank you for caring. But you don’t have to be a bigot and you don’t have to be dumb to vote for Trump,” he continued. “You can be worried about things and think that the risk of what the alternative is to him is even worse than what he is personally. And I think that’s why we are where we are.”

Trump made significant inroads with Hispanic men during the 2024 election, winning a majority of their votes nationwide. Pollster Frank Luntz in November also disputed the theory that “misinformation and disinformation” drove Hispanic male voters to Trump in 2024 when CNN anchor Boris Sanchez asked him about it.

“I don’t accept that … critically, it was about prices and it was about immigration,” he said.

About 40% of Hispanic voters identified the economy as their main issue, while roughly 70% of them described the economy as either “not so good” or “poor,” according to an exit poll by Edison Research.
