Conan OâBrien believes his fellow comedians are more likely to focus on âscreamingâ about President Donald Trump and are not necessarily funny.
OâBrien was asked in an interview with the Oxford Union Tuesday about what impact Trump has had on Comedy.
OâBrien said said Trump was not good for the genre because he has a habit of âtalking crazy,â per Fox News.
This makes it harder to do a satire or parody or parody of him, OâBrien said.
He added constantly attacking the president undermines Comedy.
âSome comics go the route of Iâm going to just say âF Trumpâ all the time or thatâs their Comedy. And I think well nowâŚyouâre being co-opted because youâre so angry,â OâBrien said. âYouâve been lulled. Itâs like a siren leading you into the rocks. Youâve been lulled into just saying âF Trump. F Trump. F Trump. Screw this guy.â And I think youâve now put down your best weapon, which is being funny, and youâve exchanged it for anger.â
âAnd that person or any person like that would say, âWell, things are too serious now. I donât need to be funny.â And I think, well, if youâre a comedian, you always need to be funny. You just have to find a way. And you just have to find a way to channel that anger into a wayâŚbecause good art will always be a great weapon, will always be a perfect weapon against power,â he continued. âBut if youâre just screaming and youâre just angry, youâve lost your best tool in the toolbox.â
OâBrien called it âtrickyâ for comedians need to use Comedy to talk about political issues.
âI have very strong political feelings and views, but my Comedy is something that I donât havethat kind of control over,â OâBrien said. âIn a way, it is thereâs so much of what Iâve done in my life thatâs impulse.â
The comedian did delve into Politics a little.
He mocked Trumpâs new ballroom, stating heâs tearing down half the White House to make a new Mar-a-Lago.
OâBrien had previously called out modern political Comedy for focusing too much on saying Trump was an âaâholeâ instead of being funny.
âIâm really going on a limb here saying thatâs his greatest crime. I think heâs hurt political Comedy by being so outlandish himself. I think the January 6 thing is a blip compared to how much heâs hurt Comedy,â OâBrien said.
