‘Cut It Out’: Charlamagne Tells Gavin Newsom To Stop Saying He Wants To ‘Trump-Proof’ California

Radio host Charlamagne Tha God criticized Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday for claiming he wants to “Trump-proof” California.

Newsom and California lawmakers initiated a special session Monday to safeguard the state’s liberal policies; the governor’s office previously told The Associated Press the effort would aim to “Trump-proof” California’s laws. Charlamagne, on “The Breakfast Club,” questioned the practicality and optics of the “Trump-proof” rhetoric, suggesting it could harm California’s relationship with the federal government.

“I do wonder what that means, to ‘Trump-proof’ a state. Like how do you ‘Trump-proof’ a state in America? Like what happens when you need the president of the United States of America for something? Like I don’t quite understand what that means,” Charlamagne said. “Maybe I just need to hear it. Maybe I need to hear the details … If there’s policies that you don’t like that Trump may enact, make it about that. Don’t make it about the person.”

“Well, that’s essentially what it is about,” journalist Morgyn Wood responded. “So Newsom is asking the California legislature for $25 million to fund possible litigation if the Trump administration enacts rules that impact California policy.”

Charlamagne expressed support for the litigation effort but reiterated his criticism of the “Trump-proof” rhetoric.

“I’m with that … but once again, make it about the policies. Because when you say things like ‘Trump-proof,’ you gon’ end up looking like a hypocrite when you need the president for something and you all in his face smiling and cheesing the same way President Biden was after they called him a ‘threat to democracy’ and all of these other things and then he was like ‘welcome back’ when it came time for the White House,” he said. “So it’s like, cut it out.”

California is considered a “sanctuary” jurisdiction for statewide policies that prohibit cooperation between local law enforcement officials and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Newsom is one of several Democratic governors and other liberal elected officials who have declared that they will resist Trump’s hardline immigration agenda.

California sued Trump’s first administration over 100 times on issues such as climate, immigration and health care, according to CalMatters.

Charlamagne in November questioned whether Biden ever truly thought Trump was a “threat to democracy” or “a fascist” due to his optimistic rhetoric regarding the president-elect following his victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.
