Rep. Katie porter (D-Calif.) is running for Senate amid speculation surrounding Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) future.

On Tuesday, Porter made the announcement on Twitter.

“California needs a warrior in the Senate—to stand up to special interests, fight the dangerous imbalance in our economy, and hold so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell accountable for rigging our democracy,” she tweeted.

Porter added, “Today, I’m proud to announce my candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2024.”

The tweet also included a video message.

“I don’t do Congress the way others often do. I use whatever power I have to speak hard truths to the powers that be,” Porter said in the video.

She mentions her mission to ban lawmakers from trading stocks.

“To win these fights, it’s time for new leadership in the U.S.

,” Porter said.

Axios noted Feinstein has not shared whether she is running for re-election.

“Everyone is, of course, welcome to throw their hat in the ring, and I will make an announcement concerning my plans for 2024 at the appropriate time,” Feinstein said to the outlet in a statement.

She continued, “Right now I’m focused on ensuring California has all the resources it needs to cope with the devastating storms slamming the state and leaving more than a dozen dead.”

In response to Porter’s announcement, several Twitter users expressed their support for her run.

Screenwriter Adam Best tweeted, “Katie porter unleashing her whiteboard on the Senate would be pure ecstasy.”

Podcast host Brian Tyler Cohen wrote, “Katie porter announces she is running for Senate. Hell yes.”

Writer Charles Adler thanked Porter for her “exceptional public service. All the best in the days ahead.”

Feinstein, who is 89 years old, has faced concerns about her age as well as her memory.

She won her sixth election in 2018.
