Democrats secured an advantage on the economy for the first time since May 2010, a Fox News poll found Thursday.
From April 17 to April 20, Democrats led Republicans 52% to 48% on the question of who would do a better job handling the economy, according to the poll. Democrats have not beaten Republicans on this question since May 5, 2010, when the party led 44% to 41% against Republicans.
The poll found that 34% of registered voters approved of Trumpās handling of the economy, while 66% disapproved. Trumpās overall approval rating dropped in the poll from 49% in March 2025 to 42% in April.
President Donald Trump won the 2024 election largely on the economy and immigration, particularly since inflation rose to record-highs during former President Joe Bidenās administration. Inflation and gas prices spiked again as a result of the Iran war, with the average national gas price standing at $4.03 as of this writing.
Trump called the word āaffordabilityā a āDemocrat scamā in December 2025, claiming that Democrats do not want to fix the economy. However, Democrats largely campaigned on affordability in the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial elections and beat their Republican opponents by double digits.
The White House has touted their economic performance, stating that inflation had been āmoderatedā and that job creation surged.
āBy prioritizing American workers, manufacturers, and energy producers, the administration is strengthening the nationās economic foundation and reducing reliance on foreign supply chains,ā the White House said. āThese policies are driving sustained growth, expanding opportunity, and ensuring the American economy remains strong, competitive, and resilient for years to come.ā
The prices of other goods have also risen since Trump took office, including beef, which has reached a record-high average of $6.70 per pound due to low cattle inventory. Prices also surged as a result of Trumpās reciprocal tariffs on several nations.
Recent polls found that most Americans disapprove of Trumpās handling of the economy. An NBC News Decision Desk poll found that 37% of participants approved of Trumpās handling of the economy, while 63% disapproved. A CNN/SSRS survey also found that Trumpās economic approval rating reached a record low of 31%.
