Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) slammed âcringey Hollywood celebritiesâ after they took aim at Florida during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.
DeSantis said in a statement shared with The Washington Examiner, âLike NYC and DC elites, Hollywood elites love to hate Florida ⌠except when theyâre vacationing here and buying homes here!â
Wanda Sykes, co-host of the event, mocked Florida over the stateâs Parental Rights in Education Act, which has also been called by critics the âDonât Say Gayâ bill.
âWell, weâre gonna have a great night tonight, and for you people in Florida, weâre gonna have a gay night,â Wanda Sykes said.
In case you missed it:
DeSantis explained, âThe lack of self-awareness is hilariously out of touch with Americans. The domestic migration pattern speaks for itself: California lost the most residents in 2021, and Florida gained the most residents in the same time frame.â
He added, âItâs a good thing Californians cannot vote in Florida elections, and itâs a great thing that ignorant, cringey Hollywood celebrities cannot veto bills passed by our legitimately elected state legislature.â
On Monday, DeSantis signed the bill into law. It will prohibit âclassroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identityâ in public schools, according to NBC News.
DeSantis noted the bill âprohibits classroom instruction about sexuality or things like âtransgenderâ in K through three classrooms.â
The Walt Disney Company released a statement saying it should ânever have passed and should never have been signed into law.â
The statement continued, âOur goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that. We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country.â
