The gunman responsible for a deadly mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, was reportedly killed by a Border Patrol agent.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that a Border Patrol agent killed the gunman after rushing the school without waiting for backup.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin tweeted Border Patrol sources told him that ā€œan elite BORTAC Border Patrol agent is believed to have shot and killed the gunman at Robb Elementary School today.ā€

He added, ā€œI’m told he entered with a tactical team while TX LEOs were engaged w/ barricaded shooter. Agent was injured.ā€

Marsha Espinosa, the assistant secretary of public affairs for the Department of Homeland Security explained Border Patrol agents ā€œresponded to a law enforcement request for assistance re an active shooter situation inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Upon entering the building, Agents and other law enforcement officers faced gun fire from the subject, who was barricaded inside.ā€

She added, ā€œRisking their own lives, these Border Patrol Agents and other officers put themselves between the shooter and children on the scene to draw the shooter’s attention away from potential victims and save lives.ā€

Espinosa continued, ā€œAt least one Border Patrol Agent was wounded by the shooter during the exchange of gunfire. On-and-off duty Border Patrol Agents arrived on the scene to assist with transferring students safely to their families and providing medical support.ā€

The Tuesday shooting left 21 dead, including 19 children and two adults.

President Joe Biden called for action after learning about the shooting.

ā€œTo lose a child is like having a piece of your soul ripped away,ā€ Biden said.

He added, ā€œThere’s a hollowness in your chest, you feel like you’re being sucked into it, never able to get out. Suffocating. It’s never quite the same.ā€

Biden argued as a nation ā€œwe have to ask, when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God’s name, will we do what we know in our gut what needs to be done?ā€

He continued, ā€œWe have to act. Don’t tell me we can’t have an impact on this carnage.ā€

Calling for ā€œcommonsenseā€ gun laws, Biden explained, ā€œWe know they work and have a positive impact.ā€
