House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries celebrated President Donald Trumpās successful deal on Thursday that led Israel and Hamas to agree to the release of all hostages.
Trump announced on Wednesday that Israel and Hamas formally agreed to the first phase of the administrationās peace plan, which involves the release of all hostages and a withdrawal of Israelās troops to a designated line. Jeffries said on āCNN News Centralā that the deal is a āvery positive first stepā to ending the Israel-Hamas war and achieving a longstanding peace.
āItās a very, very positive step in the right direction. Weāre all hopeful that this agreement will be finalized, that the hostages will be released in a matter of days and returned home to their loved ones,ā Jeffries said. āOf course that we can surge humanitarian assistance into Gaza, to alleviate the pain and suffering that Palestinian civilians have been experiencing in a theater of war for the last two years and that we can achieve not just a ceasefire, but a pathway toward a just and lasting peace for both Israel and the Palestinian people.ā
WATCH:
Trump said in a Truth Social statement that the agreement was a āhistoric and unprecedented eventā for all nations and people involved. Egypt, Qatar and Turkey all helped finalize the deal.
āAll Parties will be treated fairly! This is a GREAT Day for the Arab and Muslim World, Israel, all surrounding Nations, and the United States of America, and we thank the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, who worked with us to make this Historic and Unprecedented Event happen. BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS,ā Trump said.
Before the announcement, Secretary of State Marco Rubio handed Trump a handwritten note during a White House event which stated, āYou need to approve a Truth Social post soon so you can announce the deal first.ā
The White Houseās proposed plan also requires Hamas to hand over Gazaās administration to an āInternational Stabilization Forceā that Trump and former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair will lead with the help of Palestinian experts.
