Republican Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee introduced a resolution on Wednesday condemning the United Nations (UN) for listing the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) as âchildâs rights abusers.â
The UNpublished its âSecretary Generalâs Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflictâ on June 3, which included the IDF alongside terrorist organizations including the Taliban and Al-Shabaab for committing âgrave violations against children.â H.R. 1323 calls to reject the UNâs decision, condemns the UNâs âlongstanding bias against Israelâ and calls on Hamas to free all the remaining hostages.
âThis latest stunt by the United Nations is a total joke,â Burchett said in a statement obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation. âIsrael is our greatest ally in the Middle East and their leadership tries to protect life. Hamas, on the other hand, hides behind innocent civilians like a bunch of cowards. We need to make it clear to the United Nations that the United States completely supports Israelâs efforts to wipe these terrorists off the map.â
The bill is cosponsored by Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York and Democratic Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida and Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey.
The UNâs âbias against Israel ⌠reached unprecedented levelsâ following Oct. 7, when over 1,200 people were killed and over 250 were taken hostage by Hamas terrorists, the resolution reads. It claims the UN passes âmore resolutions targeting Israel than any other country in the worldâ and notes that the UN refuses âto recognize Hamas as a terrorist organization.â
The resolution also says Hamas uses âfunds intended for humanitarian needsâ to construct a âmassive tunnel network under Gaza for its terror activities,â and that it uses âcivilians and civilian infrastructure as human shields, which is a war crime.â
The IDF has taken âunprecedented precautions to reduce harm to civilians,â including by âaborting strikes when civilians are identifiedâ and âwarning and evacuation civilians prior to planned strikes,â the resolution reads. It also reaffirms the United Statesâ recognition of Israelâs right to âprotect and defend its citizens from those, like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran, that seek the destruction of the State of Israel.â
