Shock and grief continue to ripple through a Rhode Island community after a deadly Shooting at a youth hockey game left multiple people dead and others fighting for their lives.

According to Fox News, family members of the victims said they are “deeply and profoundly affected by the recent events that took place,” issuing their first public statement days after the violence unfolded inside a crowded arena.

Police said Robert Dorgan, 56, a transgender individual, opened fire Monday at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket during a game between Coventry and Blackstone Valley schools.

Authorities said he killed his ex-wife, Rhonda Dorgan, and their son, Aidan Dorgan, before turning the gun on himself.

Three others — Rhonda’s parents, Linda and Gerald Dorgan, along with family friend Thomas Giarrusso — were critically wounded and remain hospitalized, according to officials.

“We are reminded that behind every headline is a family experiencing profound pain and loss,” the family said in a statement released through their attorneys. “We care greatly for all families impacted by this recent tragedy and our thoughts are with them.”

Investigators said the victims were seated in the bleachers when the gunfire erupted and that there was no visible interaction between the suspect and the family before the Shooting began.

Authorities have not announced a motive.

“While there are many questions being asked, please know we are focused on all of those who have been injured and whose lives have been forever changed,” the statement continued.

The family’s attorneys said they are cooperating with law enforcement and asked that all media inquiries be directed to legal spokesperson Lawrence J. Signore. They declined to discuss the couple’s two surviving children.

Signore’s firm notes on its website that it represents individuals “injured due to someone else’s careless mistakes.”

As the investigation continues, the family said their priority remains supporting those still recovering from the attack and mourning the loved ones they lost.
