Dr. Anthony Fauci is sharing his thoughts on what he thinks will happen with COVID-19 over time.

Asked during Wednesday’s webcast on TB Alliance if COVID-19 will be longterm or reoccurring like the flu, he said, “It’s difficult to predict” but he does not think “it ultimately is going to be our worst killer” due to many people being asymptomatic.

He continued to note that he does not believe COVID-19 will “disappear” the way SARS did because COVID-19 is “so efficient in its ability to transmit from human to human.”

“I think we ultimately will get control of it,” he added. “I don’t really see us eradicating it.”

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, went on to list three conditions he believes will help to get “very good control” of COVID-19.

“I think with a combination of good public health measures, a degree of global herd immunity and a good vaccine — which I do hope and feel cautiously optimistic that we will get,” Fauci said.

He added, “I think when you put all three of those together, I think we will get very good control of this, whether it’s this year or next year, I’m not certain.”
