Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary warned that the chemicals making up the fluoride being used in drinking water could be ācarpet-bombingā the organs of American children.
Makary criticized the practice of fluoridation in drinking water in a speech for The Fund for American Studies on Wednesday in the Hart Senate building. The commissioner warned that the practice could damage the microbiome in the bodyās GI tract.
āWeāre putting a chemical in the food supply, in the drinking water that, if it does reduce cavities, itās because itās what we call bacterial-cidal, that is, it kills bacteria in the teeth. Well, if it kills bacteria in the teeth,Ā whatās it doing to the microbiome? ā Makary said.
Makary described the bodyās microbiome as āthe garden of a billion different types of bacteria that line the GI tract that live in an equilibrium.ā And he questioned the effects that the disruption of this microbiome via fluoride can have on a āgeneration of kids.ā
āIs it carpet-bombing the microbiome like weāve seen antibiotics do and other drugs? And are we permanently altering the microbiome?āĀ MakaryĀ added.
The agency moved to ban ingestible fluoride prescriptions for children in May, citing studies that suggest a connection between āfluoride and thyroid disorders, weight gain, and possibly decreased IQ.ā The press release also praised the movement by several states to āstop fluoridation of drinking water.ā However, the FDA currently does not regulate fluoride in drinking water at a federal level.
āThe DepartmentĀ is directing the CDC to reconvene the Community Preventative Services Task Force to study and make a new recommendation on fluoride,ā a spokesperson from the FDA told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
The spokesperson also directed DCNF to the Environmental Protection Agency for further comment.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. decried the Centers for Disease Control and Preventionās (CDC) recommendation of community water fluoridation earlier this year. In the May press release regarding FDA action to end prescription ingestible fluoride, the HHS secretary praised Makaryās āleadership on this vital issue.ā
āEnding the use of ingestible fluoride is long overdue,āĀ RFK Jr. said in a prepared statement at the time.Ā āIām grateful to Commissioner Makary for his leadership on this vital issue ā one that directly safeguards the health and development of our children. This decision brings us one step closer to delivering on President Trumpās promise to Make America Healthy Again.
The FDA held a public meeting regarding fluoride supplements on Wednesday. A final decision on banning these supplements is not expected until October.
