Former Clinton pollster Mark Penn said on Fox Business Friday that Democrats are sinking fast, despite the mediaâs relentless attacks on President Donald Trump.
A poll says Americans are losing confidence in Trumpâs economic leadership as his tariffs and trade policies rattle global markets. During an appearance on âKudlow,â Penn said his polling shows support for Trumpâs immigration policies surging, but only when Trumpâs name is removed from the equation.
âI think itâs very interesting when you look at the polls on immigration. If I ask about Trumpâs policies without Trump, support is 70% to 80%, OK? So when you put Trump in there, it comes back down to, in my poll, 50% to 55%.â Penn said.
Penn said that Trump has âroom to growâ as Americans get more exposure to his policy agenda.

âThat means he has room to grow. That means as his presidency rolls out, look, the media is not for him, right? They focus on every single negative thing they possibly can. But underneath, when it comes to immigration, the universities, antisemitism, all of those policies, he has overwhelming support,â Penn added.
Penn also pointed to what he said were self-inflicted wounds by Democrats that caused their approval ratings to crater.
âThe Democrats have fallen off a cliff. They have gone from ratings in the 40s to the 30s, even the 20s. Iâve never seen such ratings. And so I think he has room to grow. I think, again, you canât expect miracles in the first month, especially when itâs a polarized country,â Penn said. âThe job as president is to bring that polarization down, right? And during an election, you can win with 48. A successful president wants to get 65.â
Trumpâs overall approval rating hovers around 42%, according to Reuters. That number exceeds former President Joe Bidenâs ratings for much of his time in office, and 45% of respondents voiced support for Trumpâs immigration agenda.
Republicans have largely stood by Trump through recent economic uncertainty, with 81% approving of his economic policies, Reuters said. Meanwhile, just 5% of Democrats and 28% of independents or unaffiliated voters said they back how heâs handled the economy.
