Former Surgeon General Jerome Adams is coming to the defense of former White House COVID-19 response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx after receiving criticism following her CNN interview.
āFascinating to see zero support for Birx- the lone female doc in the room- even among women. In fact, women seem to be the most critical of her. It took more courage for her to stay than to leave, and people who werenāt there have no clue how much worse it couldāve been w/o her,ā Adams wrote on Twitter Monday.
He expressed his confusion as to why Dr. Anthony Fauci is receiving praise while Birx is receiving criticism.
āAnd I love Fauci, yet canāt understand the reverence for him vs disdain for Birx (she smiled too much?!). They were in the same rooms and had the same chances to push back or leave. Big difference was Fauci was protected/ couldnāt be fired. Both played the cards they were dealt,ā Adams continued.
Adams explained, āI just will never understand the sentiment -from people who werenāt there- that everyone (but Fauci) shouldāve walked away or got themselves fired & somehow things wouldāve been better with less doctors/ scientists/ diversity in the room. Canāt change the game from the sidelines.ā
During the CNN interview, BIrx revealed the COVID-19 death toll could have been lower if the Trump administration acted sooner.
āI look at it this way ā the first time we have an excuse. There were about 100,000 deaths that came from that original surge,ā Birx said. āAll of the rest of them, in my mind, could have been mitigated or decreased substantially.ā
Trump slammed Birx and Fauci in a statement on Monday. He called them ātwo self-promoters trying to reinvent history to cover for their bad instincts and faulty recommendations, which I fortunately almost always overturned.ā
The former president labeled Birx āa proven liar with very little credibility left.ā He added, āDr. Birx was a terrible medical advisor, which is why I seldom followed her advice.ā
