Pollster Frank Luntz said Wednesday that âpaycheck to paycheck votersâ are pleased with President Donald Trumpâs second-term agenda as his administration strives to tackle important issues that resonate with them.
Trumpâs administration has been prioritizing deporting dangerous illegal immigrants to make American communities safer, as well as improving government efficiency to cut wasteful spending. Luntz, on âOn Balance with Leland Vittert,â said these priorities are popular among âpaycheck to paycheck voters,â though they do have concerns regarding whether Trump is paying sufficient attention to lowering their everyday costs.

âThat they are really happy that people who should not be here are being asked to leave, that theyâre really happy the Washingtonâs being held responsible and accountable for wasteful Washington spending, that they want to see the government be more efficient, more effective and more accountable,â Luntz said when host Leland Vittert asked what he is currently hearing from these voters. âThe only criticism that they have is they donât want the president to take his eye off the ball when it comes to how much their day to day life costs them.â
âThese are people who, when you say âpaycheck to paycheck,â it means that their house is barely paid for, it means that they have nothing left over at the end of the week or end of the month,â he continued. âAnd they want to make sure that this administration is as focused now as they were during the election campaign. They believe in everything else. But theyâre wondering, what will tariffs do to prices? What will a focus on changing the way Washington works, how will that impact them favorably in their wallets and in their pocket books?â
Many Democratic governors have discreetly started to moderate their far-left positions on the popular issues Trump is working to solve, including immigration and government waste, in an effort to rescue themselves from their current electoral viability predicament.
Trumpâs border czar Tom Homan disclosed on Feb. 17 that there were just 229 Border Patrol encounters along the U.S.-Mexico border within the previous day, a figure he said was the lowest since he first joined the U.S. Border Patrol in 1984. A review of past Border Patrol encounters shows Homan was right as the numbers have not been so low since the 1960s.
Trumpâs Department of Government Efficiencyâs (DOGE) asserts on its website that it has cut an estimated $65 billion in government spending, including fraud.
Luntz also said on Feb. 17 that former voters who previously backed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Joe Biden but flipped to Trump in November are responding positively to the swift actions the president is taking in his new administration.
âThey love the pace of change. They were very fed up over the last four years. They wanted action. They wanted results. They looked at prices,â the pollster said at the time. âThey looked at affordability. They looked at immigration. And they didnât see anything happening. They still donât like what he says, but they like what he does.â
âThey wanted to see a reduction in wasteful Washington spending. And theyâre seeing that. So what they tell me is, âI wish he would be a little bit less rude,â but at the same time, they like what heâs doing,â he added. âThey believe heâs serious about it. And for the first time, they have confidence in the future, which is why you now see some significant shifts in the polling about the expectations for the direction in the coming years.â
