California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom admitted his party needs to spend less time on woke politics in an interview with CNN that aired Monday.
Newsom told CNNâs Dana Bash that Democrats need to be âmore focused on tabletop issues,â including electricity, childcare and housing costs. He argued that, from a âtactical perspective,â Democrats need to be more âculturally normalâ in their politics.
âFrom the prism of purely politics, thereâs no doubt that the Democratic party needs to be, dare I say, more culturally normal,â Newsom said. âI believe that.â He made a similar argument in a December 2025 interview during The New York Times Dealbook Summit in New York.
âLess prone to spending disproportionate amount of time on pronouns, identity politics, more focused on tabletop issues, things that really matterâthe stacking of stress in terms of the electricity bills and childcare costs and health care and obviously housing costs, and how easily we get trapped in that,â the Democrat said.
Newsom famously issued over 4,000 same-sex marriage licenses in 2004 as mayor of San Francisco, a stint some refer to as the âWinter of Love,â to show defiance of state and federal laws banning gay marriage. The move caused then-Senator Barack Obama to distance himself from the California governor.
Now Newsom says Democrats will âlose a lot of peopleâ if the party holds onto âidentity politics.â
âHere I was, way out front on marriage equality, so I understand this from the receiving end of this and on the front end of this leading the pack, so I think there has to be some consideration of that,â Newsom stated. âBut I think if you canât hold the line on competitive sportsâagain, sports, thereâs some nuance in the larger conversationâbut competitive, medal sports. If we canât find that nuance, I think weâre gonna lose a lot of people.â
In a separate incident, Newsom came under fire for comments he made on stage at an event promoting his book. Speaking with Democratic Atlanta Mayor Andrew Dickens, a black man, Newsom said ââIâm like you,â explaining that he scored only 960 on his SATs and âcanât read a speech.â The comments drew criticism and accusations of racism from many on Monday, including from Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Fox News host Sean Hannity, and rapper Nicki Minaj. (RELATED: Gavin Newsom Scorched For âBigotryâ After Telling Black Mayor Heâs âJust Like Youâ Before Touting Low SAT Score)
âYou didnât give a shit about the President of the United States of America posting an ape video of President Obama or calling African nations shitholes,â Newsom wrote in a response posted to X Monday. âBut youâre going to call me racist for talking about my lifelong struggle with dyslexia? Spare me your fake fucking outrage, Sean.â
Hannity then replied to Newsomâs post writing, âyou didnât give a shit being Joe Bidenâs public spokesperson knowing Joe Biden partnered with the former Klansman Robert Byrd as they tried to prevent the integration of public schools. So spare me your Fâing fake phony feigned outrage.â
âAnd How about you get homeowners building permits in the Pacific Palisades instead of making an ass out of yourself daily? Just a thoughtâŚ..â Hannity added in his X post.
