Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is saying there is a ādark sideā to former President Donald Trump, but also āmagic thereā that he is trying to āharness.ā
āWhat Iām tryinā to do is just harness the magic,ā Graham told Axiosā Jonathan Swan in a recent interview. āTo me, Donald Trump is sort of a cross between Jesse Helms, Ronald Reagan and P.T. Barnum.ā
The South Carolina lawmaker added, āHe could make the Republican Party something that nobody else I know can make it.ā
Graham noted that while Trump could apparently make the Republican Party ābigger,ā he could also ādestroy it.ā
āHe can make it bigger. He can make it stronger. He can make it more diverse. And he also could destroy it.ā
Watch Grahamās interview below:
Before Trump garnered the Republican Partyās presidential nomination in the 2016 election, Graham criticized him. But, after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, Graham embraced Trump, as Axios noted.
Additionally, Graham told Axios, āDonald Trump was my friend before the riot. And Iām trying to keep a relationship with him after the riot. I still consider him a friend. What happened was a dark day in American history, and weāre going to move forward.ā
āI want us to continue the policies that I think will make America strong. I believe the best way for the Republican Party to do that is with Trump, not without Trump,ā Graham continued.
The Congressmember later added, āThereās something about Trump. Thereās a dark side and thereās some magic there.ā
