The Washington Post is hitting Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) with four âPinocchiosâ for her claim that the Nazis were socialists.
âYou know, Nazis were the National Socialist Party. Just like the Democrats are now a national socialist party,â Greene said while speaking at an âAmerica Firstâ rally on May 27.
The Postâs Glenn Kessler noted in a fact-check the full name of Hitlerâs party was Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei and in English it translates to National Socialist German Workersâ Party.
âBut it was not a socialist party; it was a right-wing, ultranationalist party dedicated to racial purity, territorial expansion and anti-Semitism â and total political control,â Kessler wrote.
He listed the first eight of the â25 pointsâ in the 1920 Nazi party platform.
Kessler explained, âAs Ronald Granieri of the Foreign Policy Research Institute has noted, in that platform there are also passages denouncing banks, department stores and âinterest slavery.'â
He continued, âThat could be seen as âa quasi-Marxist rejection of free markets. But these were also typical criticisms in the anti-Semitic playbook, which provided a clue that the partyâs overriding ideological goal wasnât a fundamental challenge to private property.'â
Kessler pointed out left-wing parties including the Communists and Social Democrats were major parties in Germany in the 1920s.
âSo the inclusion of âsocialistâ in the partyâs name was attractive to working-class voters who might also be anti-Semitic,â the fact-check reads.
It goes on, âHitler adamantly rejected socialist ideas, dismantled or banned left-leaning parties and disapproved of trade unions.â
The Post reporter suggested Greene needs to âbrush up on her history of the Nazi party,â adding, âIt was not a âsocialistâ party and cannot be compared, either in the United States or in Europe, to todayâs socialists. She earns Four Pinocchios.â
Greene recently came under fire after comparing COVID-19 pandemic restrictions to the Holocaust.
Last week, she declared she never made the comparison, âI never compared it to the Holocaust, only the discrimination against Jews in early Nazi years. Stop feeding into the left wing media attacks on me.â
She continued, âEveryone should be concerned about the squads support for terrorists and discrimination against unvaxxed people. Why arenât they?â
