The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) voiced their frustration with CNN over the lack of Latino representation in the networkās streaming lineup.
The group said in a statement it is āappalled by the lack of Latino journalists in the CNN+ lineup. This lack of representation is not only disrespectful to our diverse community, but also disregards the well-qualified Latino talent pool within the organization.ā
The statement continues, āWe expect Chris Licht to do better to ensure that CNN hosts delivering the news reflect the communities they cover, and that diverse candidates are given equal opportunity.ā
Earlier this week, Licht was tapped to lead the network.
The group explained in order for CNN āto build a strong pipeline of Latino journalists,ā it is essential that the network ādevelop and nurture diverse talent within their news programs, not only to accurately represent communities across the country, but also to positively contribute to the networkās evolving programming.ā
Concluding its statement, the group said, āDespite a reckoning over race that has motivated many newsroom leaders to commit to diversifying their newsrooms, many news organizations continue to do a dismal job. NAHJ demands that CNN leaders rectify this oversight.ā
Licht will replace Jeff Zucker who resigned from the network earlier this month after admitting he failed to properly disclose a romantic relationship with an executive at the company.
āI certainly wish my tenure here had ended differently,ā Zucker said, adding, āBut it was an amazing run. And I loved every minute of it.ā
Licht issued a statement, praising CNNās reputation and explaining he is āhonored to have this opportunity, especially at such an important time for our country and the world.ā
He acknowledged many are wondering how the network will change.
āThe honest answer is that I donāt know yet,ā Licht said.
The Washington Post noted the networkās streaming platform, CNN plus, is expected to launch by the end of this month.
