Vice president-elect Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff are looking to shatter gender norms, as both of them will be making U.S. history.
Speaking exclusively in her first solo interview with ABCâs Robin Roberts since becoming the vice president-elect, Harris said that her husband is âvery excitedâ to be making U.S. history as the first second gentleman of the United States.
Harris also shared that her husband has a sweatshirt that says âGirl dadâ and that he is âvery proudâ to be the father of a daughter. Harris is the stepmother of Emhoffâs daughter and son.
âWe still have so much work to do to remind our children of every gender that they should not be confined by the limited perception that some might have of who they are and what they can be,â Harris said.

Harris said she sees âeach one of these momentsâ as the U.S. âadvancing as a society.â
âIt says to everyone, donât let anyone put you in a box because of your gender,â Harris said.
Harris will become the first woman vice president in U.S. history. âThe Vice President has never before been a woman, or Black, or Asian American,â Time magazine wrote in choosing Harris and Joe Biden jointly as 2020 âPerson of the Year.â
She spoke with Time about being the first, to which she said, âMy mother had many sayings. She would say, âKamala, you may be the first to do many things; make sure youâre not the last.â Which is why , I said, âI will be the first, but I will not be the last.'â
âThatâs about legacy. Thatâs about creating a pathway. Thatâs about leaving the door more open than it was when you walked in,â Harris added.
