Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Bill Keating lashed out at Republican Texas Rep. Keith Self for referring to transgender Democratic Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride as āmisterā during a hearing in a video circulating on X on Tuesday.
McBride is a biological male but identifies as a female and became the first transgender member of Congress in 2024. When Self called the Delaware representative āMister McBride,ā McBride responded by calling him āMadam Chairā before Keating jumped in. āMr. Chairman, could you repeat your introduction again, please?ā Keating asked.
Self started to say that there is an established āstandard on the floor of the Houseā before Keating interrupted to ask what the āstandardā is and again requested that Self ārepeatā the introduction he delivered for McBride.
Self obliged.
āI will. The representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride,ā Self said.
āMr. Chairman, you are out of order. Mr. Chairman, have you no decency? I mean, I have come to know you a little bit, but this is not decent,ā Keating said.
Self said he would ācontinueā the hearing, but Keating objected.
āYou will not continue it with me unless you introduce a duly elected representative the right way,ā Keating said.
Self then ended the hearing.
Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy MaceĀ introduced a resolution in November to ban biological men from using womenās restrooms in the Capitol complex in response to McBrideās election. McBride complied with House Republicansā demands to not use womenās bathrooms and facilities after Speaker Mike Johnson ordered that āall single-sex facilitiesā in the Capitol and House office buildings are to be āreserved for individuals of that biological sex.ā
āIām not here to fight about bathrooms. Iām here to fight for Delawareans and to bring down costs facing families,ā McBride said in a statement. āLike all members, I will follow the rules as outlined by Speaker Johnson, even if I disagree with them.ā
