Horace Cooper of Project 21 said Friday on Fox News that Democratsâ final âcrazyâ straw would be putting Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in place of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
In a new poll released by the left-leaning firm Data for Progress, 55% of likely Democratic voters said they would support Ocasio-Cortez in the 2028 New York Senate primary, while only 36% backed or leaned toward Schumer. On âHannity,â while discussing the movement behind the Democrat representative, Cooper warned progressives in the party that they âshouldnât go completely crazy.â
âLook, when youâre having a problem at your house because you donât like what the electrician is doing, you donât bring in an arsonist. Iâm certainly no fan of Chuck Schumer, but the progressives should keep in mind that you shouldnât go completely crazy,â Cooper said.
âMark Halperin said a week before the November election that it was very likely, if trends demonstrated where they were headed, that we would see the kind of mental health issues that weâre observing,â Cooper added.
In March, Schumer came under fire from members of his own party after backing a GOP-led spending bill to prevent a government shutdown. As calls for the Senate Minority Leader to step down began circulating, Schumer told NBCâs âMeet the Pressâ that he would stay where he was.

Cooper went on to call out the Democratsâ continual protesting of the Department of Government Efficiencyâs Elon Musk and President Donald Trumpâs administration. Party members, he said, seem to have âlost their mind.â
âNow, in America, there are psychotropic drugs that are amazing and could stop you from scratching up every Tesla that you see and, also, after so much of the party has supported high tariffs, from voting almost unanimously with Rand Paul to not have tariffs in Canada,â Cooper said.
âThis insanity hurts the party, and it makes it difficult for the American people to trust that there is anybody there that can lead,â Cooper said. âPutting AOC in charge of the Senate would just be the last example of going completely and totally crazy. They seem to have lost their mind.â
According to the survey, first obtained by Politico, Democrat respondents cited âthreats to democracy,â âprograms like Social Security and Medicareâ and âthe economy, jobs, and inflationâ as their top concerns.
Since Trump entered office, Democrats have struggled to unify around a message and leader. A CNN/SSRS poll released March 16 showed the partyâs favorability had dropped to a record low of 29%. Notably, over 30% of respondents said they could not name a Democrat leader who âbest reflects the core valuesâ of the party.
Of those who did write in names, 10% chose Ocasio-Cortez, 9% selected former Vice President Kamala Harris, 8% backed Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and 6% named House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Just 4% wrote in former President Barack Obama and Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, while only 2% supported Schumer along with a handful of others.
