The creative force behind one of the most recognizable heroes of 1980s pop culture has died, closing the chapter on a career that helped define a generation of toys and animation.

Roger Sweet, widely credited with developing the character He-Man, died Tuesday morning at the age of 91, according to his wife, Marlene, per Page Six.

She said he passed away peacefully at a care facility following a period of declining health linked to dementia.

In his final months, Sweet faced serious medical challenges. Marlene previously shared that he suffered a fall while walking alone and could not recall what had happened.

Doctors later discovered two brain bleeds, prompting an emergency stay in intensive care before he was moved into a memory care facility.

The cost of that care exceeded $10,000 a month, leading his family to seek public support. A fundraiser quickly gained traction, surpassing its initial goal and eventually raising nearly $94,000. Additional support came from the Mattel Foundation.

Sweet’s path to creating He-Man began decades earlier. Born in Akron, Ohio, he studied at Miami University in Oxford before continuing his education in design in Chicago. He later joined Mattel, where he played a pivotal role in developing what would become one of the company’s most successful franchises.

At the time, Mattel was searching for a new concept after missing out on producing toys tied to “Star Wars.”

Sweet experimented by modifying an existing figure, reshaping it into a more muscular, heroic form. That early prototype laid the groundwork for He-Man.

The character debuted in 1982 and quickly gained popularity.

A year later, the animated series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” brought the hero to television screens, following Prince Adam as he transformed into a powerful warrior with the now-famous declaration, “By the Power of Grayskull! I have the power!”

The show ran for 130 episodes and became a cornerstone of 1980s entertainment, helping drive toy sales and establish a lasting franchise.

In the decades since, the brand has expanded into spin-offs, merchandise and a dedicated fan base that continues to celebrate its legacy.

Interest in the character remains strong, with a new live-action “Masters of the Universe” film set for release, introducing He-Man to a new audience. The project features a cast that includes Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Alison Brie and Idris Elba.

Marlene said she has attempted to contact the film’s producers in hopes of honoring her late husband’s contribution.

Long after the original toys hit store shelves, Sweet’s work continues to resonate, leaving behind a legacy tied to one of the most enduring heroes in entertainment history.
