Democratic strategist James Carville wrote in an opinion piece for the New York Times that he has heard fellow Democrats describe their party as a âcracked-out clown car.â
Carville also wrote in the same op-ed that his party is âin shambles.â His comments come after a growing number of reports that Democrats have been in the political âwildernessâ in the aftermath of the partyâs decisive losses during the 2024 election cycle.
âConstipated. Leaderless. Confused. A cracked-out clown car. Divided. These are the words I hear my fellow Democrats using to describe our party as of late,â Carville wrote. âThe truth is theyâre not wrong: The Democratic Party is in shambles.â
The Democratic strategist added that the only thing that can âsaveâ his party from its current predicament is âan actual savior.â
âThe Democratic Party is steamrolling toward a civilized civil war,â Carville wrote. âItâs necessary to have it. Itâs even more necessary to delay it. The only thing that can save us now is an actual savior, because a new party can be delivered only by a person â see Barack Obama in 2008 and Bill Clinton in 1992. No matter how many podcasts or influencer streams our bench of candidates go on, our new leader wonât arrive until the day after the midterms in November 2026, which marks the unofficial-yet-official beginning of the 2028 presidential primary.â
âNo new party or candidate has a chance for a breakthrough until that day,â Carville stressed.
âUntil then, we must run unified in opposition to the Republicans to gain as many House seats as possible in the midterms, because every congressional seat we gain in 2026 means we will be more likely to bring about change in 2028,â the strategist wrote further. âAnd thereâs good news on that front.â
Carville also claimed in the op-ed that Democrats need to push messaging about demanding a ârepealâ of President Donald Trumpâs policies ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
âA ârepealâ of Mr. Trumpâs spending law is the one word that should define the midterms. It is clear, forceful and full-throated. It must be slathered across every poster, every ad, every social media post from now until next November,â Carville wrote. âThat single word is our core message. Every Democrat can run on it, with outrage directed not at the president or a person but at this disastrous bill. And the reasons are countless, each one a venom-tipped political dagger.â
Earlier in July, Carville went on a rant about how he thinks Democratsâ political messaging has largely neglected male voters. Additionally, Carville said on July 9that the Democratic Party needs to âgo back to the drawing boardâ and strategize âa different way to frameâ its widely unpopular messaging on transgenderism.
