A lively and controversial exchange unfolded on Wednesdayâs episode of The Joe Rogan Experience when podcast host Joe Rogan and Jackass star Steve-O dove into the ongoing cultural debate surrounding transgender issues â specifically the question of bathroom access.
By the end of the discussion, Steve-O admitted Rogan had changed his perspective.
âYou make a very, very good point,â Steve-O said during the conversation. âAlright, youâve convinced me.â
The debate began when Steve-O recounted a recent conversation he had with a transgender individual who described what he called severe discrimination. According to Steve-O, the person told him they were not allowed to use the restroom at their workplace, which he said âgenuinely broke my heart.â
Rogan immediately pushed back on that characterization.
âThatâs not true,â Rogan said. âTheyâre just not allowed to use the bathroom that doesnât align with their biological sex.â
Rogan acknowledged that some people sincerely believe they are born in the wrong body, but argued the broader issue becomes complicated when biological males gain access to female-only spaces.
âI genuinely think thereâs people that feel like they are in the wrong biological sex,â Rogan said. âBut thereâs also people that are perverts, and they have a thing called autogynephilia.â
Rogan explained that the term refers to individuals who become sexually aroused by imagining themselves as women. He argued that allowing biological males into womenâs bathrooms and locker rooms could create opportunities for bad actors to exploit the system.
âYou give them a Willy Wonka golden ticket to go into the womenâs locker room and the womenâs bathroom to stare at women and pretend youâre a woman,â Rogan said.
Steve-O acknowledged the complexity of the issue but conceded that Roganâs argument raised legitimate concerns.
âI donât doubt that thatâs real,â Steve-O replied. âAnd I know that itâs a super complex, nuanced thing.â
Rogan countered that while many aspects of the debate are complicated, certain biological realities are straightforward.
âBut hereâs whatâs not complex: what is your chromosomes?â Rogan said, comparing the bathroom debate to the controversy over transgender athletes competing in womenâs sports.
Rogan also framed the issue from the perspective of protecting women and girls, noting that as a father of daughters, he worries about potential abuse of open policies.
âAnd by the way, itâs men that are the problem,â Rogan added. âNo one cares about trans men going into the menâs bathroom.â
The conversation continued with Steve-O emphasizing that the transgender person he met did not appear threatening or predatory.
âI didnât get any sense that this was a creepy pervert,â he said.
Rogan responded that even if someone has no malicious intent, the biological distinction still matters when it comes to female-only spaces.
âThey donât have to be a creepy pervert, but itâs still a man,â Rogan said.
The discussion broadened into wider cultural tensions around transgender issues, with Rogan questioning claims that there is a political movement to persecute transgender individuals.
âWhoâs doing that? What politicians are saying they should be put in internment camps?â Rogan asked.
By the end of the exchange, Steve-O acknowledged that Roganâs arguments had shifted his thinking.
âAlright, youâve convinced me,â he said.
