It was probably inevitable.
âAmerican Idolâ judge Katy Perry received a loud chorus of boos for feedback she gave to Nutsa, a contestant on Monday nightâs Top 26 show in Hawaii.
Nutsa had just completed what Entertainment Tonight referred to as an âenergetic performance of âParis (Ooh La La)â by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.â
Incidentally, thatâs actually the official name of the song, even though the lyric is very clearly âoo la la.â I wonder how many times thatâs been pointed out to Grace Potter? Not enough, apparently.
Perry didnât correct the songâs name either, but she did have some other things to say.
âNutsa, every time you take the stage, itâs like you glitter Bomb the stage,â Perry said. âListen, I think one thing I personally would like to see from you is not one piece of glitter the next time.
âI know thatâs gonna be hard,â she added.
As the crowd booed, Lionel Richie stood and held his hand out placatingly to the crowd, saying, âWhoa, hostility!â while Luke Bryan laughed.
âYes!â he yelled. âKaty got booed! Katy got booed!â
âOK, the first time in six seasons,â Perry responded, rolling her eyes. âWoo-hoo!â
For what itâs worth, Nutsa seemed to agree with Perryâs thinking.
âBut what Iâm saying is that, Iâd like you to flip the script,â Perry explained. âI think we want to be pulled in by our hearts too.
âIâd love to see that,â she added, âand I think America might too.â
âExactly,â Nutsa replied.

While itâs obvious that the audience didnât like what the singer had to say about Nutsaâs look, thereâs certainly a possibility that at least some of that negative reaction was left over from comments Perry had made to another singer a few weeks back.
Young mother Sara Beth Liebe has quit this seasonâs âAmerican Idolâ following comments from Perry that she called ânot super kind.â
She didnât, however, blame Perryâs comments for her decision.
In a video released on TikTok in the days following the audition, Liebe called the comments âhurtfulâ but thanked the young moms who supported her and said âwomen supporting and Uplifting other women is so coolâ â subtly putting Perry in her place.
