During her previous tenure as a political commentator, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany made a number of comments about the 2016 election praising Democratic nominee Joe Biden and calling him ā€œa man of the people.ā€

The comments were first unearthed by CNN and McEnany made them during an interview with a New York radio show.

Asked in 2015 whether the Republicans would rather run against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Biden, McEnany said, ā€œI think the Republicans run into a problem if it is Joe Biden and if it is maybe a Trump on the other side. Because Joe Biden, one of the things he is remarkable at is really kind of being a man of the people and resonating with middle class voters. Feeling like — coming off as human. His gaffes — as much as we make fun of them — to a certain extent they make him look human.ā€

McEnany added moments later, ā€œI think at the end of the day, probably Joe, although if Trump is against Joe, I think the juxtaposition of kind of the man of the people and kind of this tycoon, is a problem. Although, Donald Trump is remarkably coming off as a man of the people despite being this wealthy business tycoon.ā€

Her history of blasting Trump is well documented. During television hits before the 2016 election, McEnany said, ā€œI don’t want to claim this guy,ā€ and, ā€œDonald Trump has shown himself to be a showman, I don’t think he’s a serious candidate.ā€

McEnany recently took on a new role — in addition to her post as White House press secretary, she also began appearing as an adviser to Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.
