Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) says the Republican Party is âbasically the Titanicâ amid conflict among members regarding Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and her leadership position.
âFace the Nationâ host John Dickerson asked Kinzinger on Sunday, âWhat is this debate about?â
Kinzinger replied, âI think what the reality is as a party we have to have an internal look and a full accounting as to what led to January 6. Right now itâs basically the Titanic.â
He added, âWeâre in the middle of this slow sink. We have a band playing on the deck, telling everybody itâs fine, and meanwhile, Donald Trumpâs running around, trying to find womenâs clothing and get on the first lifeboat.â

Kinzinger claimed, âThereâs a few of us that are just saying âguys this is not good,â not just for the future of the party, but this is not good for the future of this country.â
Taking aim at Republicans who want to âmove onâ from the insurrection, Kinzinger continued, âItâs been four months, and we have so many people, including our leadership in the party, that has not admitted that this is what it is which was an insurrection led by the president of the United States.â
Touching on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthyâs (R-Calif.) comments following the insurrection, Kinzinger added, âLiz Cheney is saying exactly what Kevin McCarthy said the day of the insurrection. Sheâs just consistently been saying it.â
He continued, âAnd a few weeks later, Kevin McCarthy changed to attacking the other people.â
House Republicans are expected to remove Cheney from her leadership position and replace her with Rep. Elise Stefanik.
Last week, Kinzinger came to Cheneyâs defense. On Twitter, he responded to a statement issued by her communications director.
Jeremy Alder wrote, âThis is about whether the Republican Party is going to perpetuate lies about the 2020 election and attempt to whitewash what happened on Jan 6. Liz will not do that. That is the issue.â
Kinzinger tweeted, â100 percent. This IS THE ISSUE.â
