Primary voters headed to the polls Tuesday in five states, with Michigan emerging as the night's biggest political battleground as Democrats wage a high-profile fight over the party's direction ahead of the midterm elections.
According to Fox News, polls closed in Virginia while voting also took place in Michigan, Kansas, Missouri and Washington state.
Although several closely watched races are on the ballot, much of the attention is centered on Michigan's Democratic Senate Primary.
The contest pits former Wayne County Health Department Director Abdul El-Sayed against Rep. Haley Stevens in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.
The winner will advance to the general election in one of the nation's most competitive Senate races.
The Primary has become a proxy battle between the party's progressive wing and its more moderate establishment.
El-Sayed, an epidemiologist who previously ran for governor in 2018, has campaigned on support for "Medicare-for-all," opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and criticism of Israel's military campaign in Gaza.
He has also pledged not to accept political action committee donations.
Stevens, who first won her House seat in 2018 after flipping a Republican-held district, has earned endorsements from Peters, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Her supporters argue she is better positioned to hold the Senate seat for Democrats in November.
The race has shattered spending records, with more than $80 million poured into the Primary.
Much of the outside spending has backed Stevens or opposed El-Sayed, including significant expenditures from United Democracy Project, a political action committee affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
El-Sayed has criticized the outside spending, arguing the large financial investment raises questions about Stevens' political support.
The winner will face former Rep. Mike Rogers, who is expected to secure the Republican nomination.
Rogers, who narrowly lost Michigan's Senate race in 2024, said he believes he can defeat either Democratic candidate in the general election.
The ideological divide is also shaping several House races in Michigan, including the competitive 7th Congressional District and the safely Democratic 13th District, where establishment-backed incumbents face progressive challengers.
Tuesday's elections are also testing President Donald Trump's influence within the Republican Party.
In Michigan, Trump has endorsed Rep. John James in the Republican gubernatorial Primary, while in Kansas he is backing state Senate President Ty Masterson in the race to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly.
Washington state's 3rd Congressional District and several Virginia congressional primaries are also expected to provide early signals about the political environment heading into the midterm elections, with control of both the House and Senate on the line.
