Mars is planning to release M&M’s without artificial dyes in August, The Wall Street Journal first reported on Thursday.
The candy giant has been shelling out millions of dollars crafting a revamped version of M&M’s that is free from artificial dyes, according to the WSJ. The move is part of a broader effort from Mars to be more in line with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda, the WSJ reported.
Mars had difficulty replicating some of M&M’s classic bright colors using only natural coloring, per the WSJ’s report.
“It was a daunting situation,” Anton Vincent, president of Mars’ snacking division for North America, told the outlet. “You’re messing with an 85-year-old icon.”
The new version of M&M’s made without artificial dyes will be available on Amazon’s website beginning in August, and Mars still plans to continue selling the other M&M’s that are artificially colored as well, according to the WSJ.
Mars did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request seeking comment.
“Great to see another household name coming to the MAHA table — especially one with roots here in Kansas,” Republican Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall said Thursday in a statement posted to X. “I appreciated the opportunity to discuss healthy product changes when I toured the Topeka facility last summer.”
Mars notably pledged in 2016 to remove all artificial colors from its food portfolio worldwide. The company later said in a statement on its website that it “found that consumer expectations regarding colors in food differ widely across markets and categories.”
“This has motivated US to reevaluate our global intent and seek to identify approaches that are more locally tailored to address these differences,” according to the statement.
Kennedy has previously called for major food companies in the U.S. to eliminate artificial dyes in their products. He wrote in a July 17, 2025 X post that “the American people have made it clear—they want real food, not chemicals.”
On Monday, Nestlé confirmed that it has now completely phased out artificial colors from all of its food and beverage products in the U.S.
Mars also announced in July 2025 that it will invest $2 billion into U.S. manufacturing through 2026 as part of an effort to build “a stronger, more resilient business.”
