Netflix is releasing a movie called the “Queen of Coal” to American audiences Dec. 19, which will follow a “trans woman” as the individual pursues their goal of working in the mines.
The Netflix description notes that the Spanishfilm follows a “trans woman” that must navigate a “town steeped in superstition and patriarchy” to conquer their dreams of earning a wage in the coal mines. Though the production was created by the Spanish company Morena Films, Netflix is set to add the film to its American repertoire right before Christmas, according to a banner on the company’s website.
“The Queen of Coal does a disservice to women coal miners who earned their spot in the industry. There are plenty of trailblazing women to profile. Why not make a movie or documentary about them?” Director of Independent Women’s Center for Energy and Conservation Gabriella Hoffman told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Netflix missed the mark here. Viewers want to watch films without a political lecture and the erasure of women. … Woke content like this could complicate potential merger talks with Warner Bros Discovery.”
Netflix struck an agreement to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in a deal valued at more than $80 billion on Friday.
