Fox contributor Mary Katharine Ham pushed back against senior political analyst Juan Williams on Sunday after he claimed the numbers show the âeconomy is better nowâ under the Biden-Harris administration compared to former President Donald Trumpâs.
Goldman Sachs economists released a note last week suggesting that the economy under Vice President Kamala Harris could give a âvery slight boostâ to GDP investment, while Trumpâs plan might negatively impact growth due to âtariffs and tighter immigration policy.â Williams defended Goldman Sachsâ response to the two administrations during âSunday Report,â but Ham interjected, noting that they werenât addressing the concerns of average Americans at the grocery store.
âThe reality is, if you look at the numbers, the economy is better now than it was then. So youâre dealing with this kind of memory sense of things,â Williams said. âBut the context is Goldman Sachs, theyâre no left-wing organization. Theyâre saying the economy will be better under Kamala Harris â â Williams said.
âTheyâre also not mom buying groceries though,â Ham jumped in.
Williams then called out Trumpâs speech to the New York economic club, stating he had messed up what shouldâve âbeen a knockout.â
âI think this week there was 88 top executive who came out and said, âWe think the economy will spur, will boost under Kamala Harris,ââ Williams continued. âAnd this week Trump went before the New York economic club to give a speech and it should have been â given the perception he want to say the economy was better â it shouldâve been a knockout for him in front of all those rich men. Instead, he delivered word salad on a question about child care.â

âMy sense is, look, the job numbers are good, the stock market is good and right now the Federal Reserve is in a position where they are likely to raise â Iâm sorry, lower interest rates, which will raise, I think, opportunities for Kamala Harris to say we have a future thatâs better coming under my administration.â
Fox host Shannon Bream then returned to Hamâs comment, noting that Ham is a mother herself and hears from other mothers about âwhat they think.â
âMy perspective is, if itâs hurting us, I know itâs hurting other people pretty much, much more. Itâs hard to argue that the inflation â although the rate of it is falling â youâre not getting back to the 1.9 that we had in January 2017, 2016, when Trump was in office, right? And this hurts people,â Ham said. âWhen you talk about the jobs market, yes, we are adding jobs, but itâs mediocre at best. And weâre revising down every single month to accumulative number thatâs taken a pretty big hit on those numbers. â
Following the unveiling of her economic plan in mid-August, Harris faced pushback from political pundits on both sides of the aisle. Her focus on a federal ban on âcorporate price gougingâ aimed to reduce grocery store prices, but critics warned the plan could negatively impact the economy by driving up prices and potentially create black markets.
An ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll from August shows that, despite Harris holding a slight national lead, Americans still trust Trump more on top voting concerns like the economy, inflation and immigration. Trump leads Harris by nine points on handling the economy and inflation alike and by 10 points on managing the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the data.
